Prohibited & banned items
We want everyone at Longbenton to feel safe, supported and ready to learn. Please help us by making sure your child knows which items must not be brought into school.
This page brings together the items listed in our Behaviour for Learning Policy. Please read it alongside the full policy for details of our expectations and how concerns are managed.
Prohibited items
The behaviour policy identifies possession of the following as serious misbehaviour:
- Knives or weapons.
- Alcohol and illegal drugs.
- Stolen items.
- Tobacco, cigarette papers and vapes.
- Fireworks.
- Pornographic images.
- Any article a member of staff reasonably suspects has been, or is likely to be, used to commit an offence, cause personal injury or damage property. This includes injury to the pupil themselves.

Other banned items
The policy also lists the following items as banned at Longbenton:
- Electronic cigarettes and other simulated cigarette or nicotine related products.
- Chewing gum.
- Carbonated drinks and energy drinks high in caffeine, such as Monster and Relentless.
- Firecrackers, matches and lighters.
- Water pistols and any toy that resembles a weapon.
- Other chemical substances such as those described as “legal highs”.
- Pornographic material.
- Other items or materials prohibited for children under 16, where the pupil is under 16.

Phones & personal devices
Phones must be switched off before pupils arrive at the school gate and handed in at the start of the school day. They are stored during the day and returned at the end of the day. Pupils must not carry or use their phones during the school day.
The policy also says pupils must not bring personal electronic devices into school, including:
- Personal laptops and tablets.
- Smartwatches and Kindles.
- Cameras, music players and gaming devices.
If your child needs a device for a medical reason or additional need, please speak to school about their individual arrangements.

If an item is brought into school
Banned or prohibited items may be confiscated. The school’s procedures for searching, confiscation and any further action are set out in the Behaviour for Learning Policy.
Items that do not meet the uniform policy, such as inappropriate jewellery or hoodies, may also be confiscated. The policy explains when parents or carers will need to collect confiscated items.
If your child is worried about an item they have seen or been given, please encourage them to tell a member of staff straight away.
