Yesterday, I had the pleasure of taking a Y7/8 girls football team to Burnside for a 9-a-side friendly. Apart from the little 7-a-side tournaments, this was their first ‘proper game’, and hopefully the first of plenty more!

The game kicked off with LHS on the front foot, and after a few half chances, we took the lead after Alana found Freya with a lovely pass, which she converted with ease. This opened the floodgates. The 2nd came from Violet holding up the ball, pinging a pass out to the on running Amelia, and a cross to the back post for Alexis to convert. Freya got her 2nd and our 3rd latching onto a Isabella through ball. Amelia then converted after a Violet pass, and an Alexa interception and finish made it 5. Sophie then bagged 2 thanks to assists from Alana and Alexa, before Violet bagged a fully deserved goal herself, making it 8-0 at half time.

The second half began with changes in positions, lots of substitutions to keep fresh from the heat, and as a result, a slower game as Burnside defended better. It didn’t take long for another goal, with Alana converting well. Alexis then latched onto a loose pass and thumped a thunderbolt into the top corner. She then grabbed her hat-trick after another interception and fine finish into the bottom corner. Robbin then rounded off the scoring, making it an emphatic and clinical 12-0 win. The girls wanted me to mention that it was 1 better than the boys when they played Burnside and won 12-1, with the girls keeping a clean sheet!

The girls were absolutely exceptional. The performance speaks for itself, as we played some really impressive football! As much as I’m proud of the performance, I’m also proud of the support for each other and effort they put in. It put a huge smile on my face!

Player of the match - honourable mentions to Amelia, who was a constant threat on the wing with her speed and crossing, and Violet, who scored and assisted, alongside some outstanding link up play when up front which led to a few of our goals. Player of the match though, was Alexis D. A much deserved hat-trick, and an assist, as well as some excellent footwork, sharp passing and endless energy meaning she was a constant threat to Burnside.

Starting 9: Rosie B, Eliza D, Isabella H, Robin T, Alexis D, Alana B, Freya S, Amelia G (C), Violet P.
