Year 12 Theatre Studies students travelled to Leeds in October to see Red Ladder Theatre Company’s radical new production, of Bertolt Brecht’s timeless and epic drama, ‘Mother Courage and Her Children’. This pop up production, associated with Leeds Playhouse, was performed in a dark, dusty, disused warehouse on the outskirts of the city. Red Ladder’s incredibly immersive promenade production, wowed students as they followed Mother Courage, played by the exceptionally talented Pauline McLynn, and her wagon around the basement. Sixth formers were inspired by the imaginative staging and powerful performances and the anti war theme resonated as Brecht intended. The play may be set during the Thirty Years War in the 17th Century but this fantastic production emphasised how shockingly relevant it still is today.
