Supporting Your Child at Home

At LHS, we believe that learning doesn’t stop at the school gates. Parents and carers play a vital role in supporting their child’s education, wellbeing, and personal development. Here are some simple ways you can help your child thrive at home.

1. Encourage Good Routines

  • Ensure your child gets enough sleep, regular meals, and exercise.

  • Support them in being punctual and prepared for school each day.

2. Create a Positive Study Environment

  • Provide a quiet, well-lit space for homework and revision.

  • Encourage regular short breaks to help with concentration.

  • Limit distractions such as mobile phones and social media during study time.

3. Take an Interest in Their Learning

  • Ask about what they are studying in lessons.

  • Look at homework tasks together and encourage independence.

  • Use online platforms to stay involved. Check your child's Google Classrooms for homework and their GCSEPod account - what have they been asked to do/learn/revise?

4. Support Reading and Literacy

  • Encourage regular reading for pleasure, not just for schoolwork.

  • Talk about books, articles, or news stories together.

  • Support spelling, grammar, and vocabulary through everyday conversation and writing.

5. Talk About School and Wellbeing

  • Show interest in your child’s school life – their friends, activities, and achievements.

  • Encourage open conversations about feelings, worries, or challenges.

  • Remind them it’s normal to seek help if they are struggling.

6. Encourage Independence and Responsibility

  • Help them manage their time and deadlines, rather than doing it for them.

  • Encourage them to pack their own school bag and organise their resources.

  • Praise effort, resilience, and progress – not just results.

7. Stay Connected With School

  • Check MCAS (My Child At School) for updates

  • Read school newsletters and emails.

  • Contact staff if you have concerns – we are here to help.
