Our Y7/8 Cricket team to Tynemouth CC for the day on Thursday 13th June for a 8 a-side tournament against other North Tyneside schools. The winner will progress through to the Northumberland Finals Day.
We were placed in a group with St Thomas More A Team and Norham. The top team after the games would progress into the semi finals. We played STM first, who were finalists from last year, and beat them comfortably with contributions from everyone. We then had a friendly with Marden High before taking on Norham. We batted first against Norham looking to set a big total, and it was our only Y7 representative, Andrew Ross, who stole the show. Batting with Daniel Thompson as our last pair, Andrew managed to play the perfect over, smacking 6 monstrous 6s from the final over, sparking mass scenes from the lads and a beaming smile on Andrew’s face.
We moved into the semi finals after our lunch break, where we played John Spence A. Batting first, we set an OK total, knowing that taking wickets to take 5 runs per wicket off the opposition total was vital if we were going to win. Going into the last pair of John Spence’s innings, having picked up some key wickets, we were up against a Y8 student who has played Senior Men’s first team cricket this season at the highest local level. We managed to pick up wickets, but unfortunately the ball did get panned over the trees one too many times from this young student, and we lost by a narrow 6 runs.
We then played Valley Gardens in a 3rd place play-off, rotating the team more than in previous games to give everyone a go in the last game. We lost by 5 runs however, but the lads put up a great performance to finish.
We haven’t been able to do much cricket in school with the weather, and not being able to do any indoors either. So to make the semi finals, like we did last year, is an outstanding achievement. I’m proud of the team and the team should be proud of themselves.
