Our Y7 and Y8 students were at an Athletics competition on 4th June, where they competed in various events against a range of other schools in North Tyneside. This event, should they do well, feeds into the Northumberland County finals event at the end of the month.
Unfortunately, the rain did put a stop to some of the events, which frustratingly meant some students got the old 'thanks for coming'. They did have a chilled afternoon though watching and supporting some of our other athletes in the events we did manage to get through.
The first event to take place involving LHS students was the Y7 girls 1500m. Robin Tierney and Amelia Guy were representing us in this event, and ran tremendously. Robin secured first place and Amelia secured 2nd place. In the Y8 shot, Nell Newman took first place (despite only asking to do it 10 minutes prior to the event!) Jasmine Slater just missed out on a top 3 place but competed very well. Noah Breakwell came joint 4th in the Javelin (there were some monstrous throws from other schools). We managed to squeeze in a couple of sprint events for Y7, where Alexis Dowdney, Robin Tierney and Isaac Viereckl gave great accounts of themselves in the 100m, but missed out on the top 3 against some strong sprinters. After a long pause due to the torrential rain, we had representatives in the Y7 boys and Y8 boys 1500m. Mason Sainthouse secured 2nd place in the boys race, and Aidan Whitfield replicated this with an outstanding run to finish 2nd.
Unfortunately, Maisey Mensley, Claudia Nelson, Jack Dawson and Luke Davidson's events were cancelled due to the weather, and others missed out on their second event after the heavens opened . We are hopeful the remaining events get rearranged.
Despite this, the students upheld all of our values, and competed very well against some strong opponents (some were going through vigorous warm ups with their spikes on!). They should be very proud of themselves.
