About DofE at Longbenton High School

NEWSFLASH! – In April 2016 we have students collecting their Gold award from St James Palace in London!

At Longbenton Community College there are many staff and students from Year 10 to Year 13 who are involved in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme.

Students register for the Silver award toward the end of Year 10. Our students from the Melrose Centre also undertake the Bronze Programs.

The Bronze Award programme has 4 sections, Volunteering, Physical, Skills and Expedition. Pupils do a minimum of 3 months activity for each of the Volunteering, Physical and Skills sections, and plan, train for and do a 2 day Expedition.

The Silver Award. A Silver DofE programme again has 4 sections, Volunteering, Physical, Skills and Expedition. Pupils do at least 6 months Volunteering and a minimum of 12 months on either Physical or Skills and 6 months on the other. The Expedition section involves planning, training for and doing a 3 day expedition.

Pupils in the Sixth Form complete the Gold award. They will spend 12 months on their Volunteering section. For Physical and Skills they must spend 12 months on one and six months on the other. Pupils decide which way round you do it. The expedition will be for four days and three nights (plus an acclimatisation day) and should take place in ‘wild country’. The big difference at Gold is pupils will also do a Residential section – staying away from home for five days and four nights doing a shared activity with people they do not know. It is great fun and a real chance to do something different!

For more information about the award, have a look at the official website www.dofe.org and for uploading evidence it is www.edofe.org
