Can understand texts of approx. 50 words. Sentences may have more than one clause (including reasons for opinions), and texts draw on a range of vocabulary and structures. They could include two time frames.

Can use simple phrases and sentences independently to describe people, places, things and actions, with good pronunciation. Give a presentation including a range of present tense verbs including reflexives.

This will include a conditional tense verb.

Writing

Can write simple words and several short phrases from with support. Sometimes spellings cannot be deciphered.

Can write simple words and several short phrases from memory with mostly understandable spelling.

Can write a short, simple text from memory, using simple sentences from one familiar topic with reasonable spelling.

This will include a past tense verb.

Can write a paragraph from memory made up of short sentences using taught language on a few topics. Spelling from memory may have some inaccuracy. May not yet understand fully how sentences are formed grammatically.

Grammar

Shows limited understanding of new grammatical concepts.

e.g.

limited understanding of verbs and their formation.

 

Understands that French nouns are masculine or feminine.

 

 

Can give and understand a simple opinion.

Shows a fair understanding of new grammatical concepts and applies them with some success within a familiar context.

 

e.g.

Can use some regular verbs correctly with support using Je and Tu

 

Can recognise and explain the masculine and feminine terms le/la and un/une

 

 

Can give and understand a simple opinion and may be able to give and understand a simple reason.

 

Understands new grammatical concepts well and applies them with success in familiar contexts and some degree of success in different contexts. Can insert new words into existing structures and re-use pre learned structures in new contexts.

Can recognise all parts of regular verbs with support.

 

 

Start to apply adjectival agreement rules.

 

 

Can give and understand a simple opinion and a simple reason.

 

Understands and is able to explain new grammatical concepts and is able to successfully apply them even in unfamiliar contexts. Can insert new words into existing structures and be consistently accurate.
