Dear Year 11 Parent/Carer,

Arrangements for Year 11 Mock Exams 2020

I am writing to update you on our arrangements for Year 11 mock exams; please see the attached finalised timetable. As I stated in my letter last week, Year 11 students have come back with a fantastic attitude and it bodes well for their approach to these assessments.

You will be aware that the viability of 2021 exams for school leavers in Year 11 and Year 13 continues to be a source of current debate and you will also know that the exam season did not run last summer, with students awarded centre assessed grades (CAGs) in their place.  Wales and Scotland have both announced that their Year 11 students will not be sitting exams next summer. Despite the fact there is still speculation that the government will announce changes next term, the DfE have continued to hold the line that exams will go ahead in schools in England, with the caveat that they will start 3 weeks later than normal. Looking forward, please note that they have also changed the date for GCSE results day; it is now much later than usual on Friday 27th August 2021.

We want to ensure that the mock exams that Year 11 students sit at the end of this month are robust assessments, carried out properly and fairly in real exam conditions. We are also mindful of the possibility that if we end up in a similar situation to the 2019-20 cohort, who were awarded CAGs, that these mock exams will help staff and students to have a very clear picture of likely outcomes next summer. For those reasons, we are proposing to adapt our usual mock exam processes this year as follows:

  • Year 11 students will be granted exam leave (as they would in the summer) from 23-27th November, which is the first week of the mock exam timetable. This means that they will only come into school to sit their exams and will work/revise from home in between (unless you have stated that you would like access to alternative arrangements for your child). The first week of exams is very full, which would mean considerable disruption to the usual timetable anyway. We would also like to give students the opportunity to feel fully prepared as they walk into each exam, minimising any stress. We would expect students back in school as normal the following week, from Monday 30th November, where there are fewer exams running.

  • Keep Up sessions and Action Tutoring will therefore not run from 23-27th November (but will resume on Monday 30th November)

  • Mock results will be reported to parents before the end of term (mid-December).
